Glaucoma Screening at Leslie Sessel Optometrist

What is Glaucoma?

Glaucoma is a condition where increased pressure inside the eye causes damage to the optic nerve and gradual loss of sight. If untreated, glaucoma can cause permanent loss of vision. Glaucoma is one of the main causes of blindness in adults.

Are you suffering from the following symptoms: eye pain, headaches, blurred vision or halo light vision?

These are typical glaucoma symptoms and you should consider getting a glaucoma screening.

Everyone has some risk of getting glaucoma, especially as they get older.

Early detection/diagnosis and treatment of glaucoma are imperative in minimising or preventing vision loss.

Every eye exam at Leslie Sessel Optometrist includes glaucoma screening.

What to expect from a Glaucoma Screening at Leslie Sessel Optometrist?

      • Measure eye pressure (quick and painless method)

      • Examination of optic nerve damage

      • Measurement of the optic nerve condition

Should your eye exam show signs of glaucoma, we will refer you to an ophthalmologist who will advise on the following treatments:

      • Eye drops

      • Medication

      • Surgery

What is the difference between glaucoma and cataracts?

Glaucoma results in damage to the optic nerve, which connects the eye to the brain. A cataract is the clouding of the normal (clear) lens in the eye, causing blurry, smudgy or milky vision.

This usually occurs in people over 55, but it can also occur in younger people. Visually significant cataracts are referred to an ophthalmologist for assessment and possibly surgery. Modern cataract surgery is amazingly successful.

Both can be slow-developing conditions but with early detection and treatment, vision loss can be prevented.
